Software Isn’t Dying. It’s Becoming AI.

For decades, enterprise software has been built around one assumption.

Once you’re in, you’re not leaving.

The software becomes more than a tool.

It becomes infrastructure.

Your data moves into proprietary formats.

Your workflows become custom.

Your integrations multiply.

Your people adapt.

Your business changes.

Years later, replacing the software feels impossible.

Not because it’s the best option.

Because the cost of leaving is too high.

Some companies even celebrate this.

They call it “stickiness.”

I think it’s a design failure.


The best software shouldn’t survive because customers are trapped.

It should survive because customers choose it every day.

Those are very different business models.

One depends on switching costs.

The other depends on delivering value.

I know which one I’d rather build.


AI is about to expose this problem.

Every enterprise application is rushing to add an AI assistant.

An AI copilot.

An AI agent.

An AI workflow.

Most of them are trying to make their own product indispensable.

I think that’s backwards.


I don’t believe intelligence belongs inside every application.

I think intelligence belongs above applications.

The operating layer should understand your business.

The applications should expose capabilities.

That’s an important distinction.

Today, your CRM knows your customer.

Your ERP knows your inventory.

Your document system knows your files.

Your ticketing system knows your support history.

Your messaging platform knows your conversations.

Each system has a piece of the picture.

None of them understands the whole business.


I don’t think the future is replacing every enterprise application overnight.

Most organizations have invested years building the systems they depend on.

Those systems aren’t disappearing.

But I do think the relationship between them is going to change.

Instead of forcing people to learn every application, intelligence will increasingly move between them.

Instead of opening five different systems, you’ll ask one operating layer to coordinate the work.

The applications become capabilities.

The operating layer becomes the experience.


That’s the direction I’m building toward with TARX.

Not another application competing with every piece of enterprise software.

An operating system that helps organizations connect what they already have while giving them the freedom to evolve over time.

If they replace a CRM, the operating layer shouldn’t have to change.

If they move from one document platform to another, their AI shouldn’t lose its memory.

If they adopt a different model, they shouldn’t rebuild everything from scratch.

Architecture should survive technology decisions.


That philosophy extends beyond deployment.

I believe organizations should be able to inspect the operating layer they’re depending on.

They should understand how it works.

They should extend it.

Integrate it.

Govern it.

Run it inside their own environments when they choose.

Open systems create confidence.

Opaque systems create dependency.

For infrastructure this important, I think confidence wins.


This doesn’t mean every piece of enterprise software becomes open source.

It doesn’t mean every organization wants to manage everything themselves.

Many won’t.

Managed services will continue to matter.

Commercial software will continue to matter.

Support, governance, compliance, and operational expertise all create real value.

But the foundation shouldn’t depend on lock-in.

It should depend on trust.


I don’t want TARX to become software that’s difficult to leave.

I want it to become software organizations don’t want to leave.

There’s a difference.

One is enforced.

The other is earned.

As AI becomes the operating layer for modern work, I think the companies that earn trust will outlast the companies that depend on lock-in.

That’s the company I’m trying to build.
